Inspiration
11 years ago in Phillip Askew's hometown in Alabama, there weren't any
yoga studios, so when Phillip and his mom heard about a few people
meeting up at a children's theater and flipping through yoga books and
trying the poses
out together, they decided to give it a whirl. Fast forward to 2011,
and at age 29, Phillip is a yoga stud and he's just put out a video
which is the closest thing I've seen to a "NIKE Just Do It!" for yoga.
Philip
says he was "tremendously inflexible" and started practicing for "just a
few minutes a day" back in Alabama. His home practice went on for
another three years before he even walked into his first yoga class!
When he was at NYU studying film, he came across Jivamukti,
but it was "difficult to walk into class" because he wasn't used to
practicing in front of others. Fast forward to the present, and you can
see from this video as Phillip is practicing in 45 locations (mostly in
New York City and Mysore, India), he is more than fine with practicing
in front of others.
Back to the video. Not only does Phillip star
in this four-minute video, but he also shot it and edited it. He had
some help from Douglas Stewart in NYC and his girlfriend, Taylor Flynn,
but this is still pretty darn impressive! All-in-all he shot in 45
locations, totaling over 30 hours of yoga footage. He was on his head
for 30 minutes on the shot you'll see of the Brooklyn Bridge!
What's
the inspiration behind the video? Philip says he "always had the idea
of approaching yoga from an artistic point of view -- bringing yoga into
the world."
Yogi or non-yogi, you'll definitely appreciate this
four-minute video. My favorite shots are definitely in India when
Phillip is practicing with all these little kids watching attentively. article by: Jason Wachob http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-1932/Story-Behind-Phillip-Askews-Awesome-Yoga-Video.html
