What does intersex mean?

Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe medical conditions where people's sexual and reproductive systems do not fit into the standard male/female definitions. Some conditions affect the look of sexual organs while some affect hormone regulation. An older term for this is "hermaphrodite" but the community is moving away from this word as it is not medically accurate and has a stigma attached to it.

Welcome! This guide was made to help young adults in the Bay Area find out more about intersex conditions. Whether you have an intersex condition or know someone who does, this guide will connect you with resources that will help you learn more about what it means to be intersex.

Included you will find information about advocacy groups, hear about other people who have an intersex condition, books both fiction and non-fiction which discuss intersex people and their lives and also films. This resource guide will focus on general intersex information but there are many sites out there for your specific diagnosis if you would like to know more.

There are many debates in the intersex community, some having to do with medical treatment, gender assignment and if surgery is necessary, at what age it should occur. You will have to make up your own mind as to what you think is the best decision for you, but this guide will connect you with the arguments that are out there. In order to get a glimpse for the current debate, check out this 2 part video which shows the opinions of an intersex person and a doctor from the medical community.
